Pattaya,
about 95 kms from Bangkok on eastern coastlines of Gulf of Thailand, was
the first internationally renowned seaside resort in Thailand.
Pattaya is a good base for diving in Sattahip and Samae San areas.
In the first place, some excellent dive
shops offer first-rate instruction and service of all kinds for the
visiting diver. An additional advantage: unlike some other places in
Thailand where the under-water attractions themselves may be generally
better, the quality of diving around Pattaya is much the same throughout
the year.
Also, the "Outer Islands" off
Pattaya, as well as the islands and shipwrecks off Sattahip (20 kms south
of Pattaya) and Samae San (a few kms farther south still) offer lots of
interest.
Pattaya's coastal waters contain some 30
islands fringed with a wide variety of coral. Reefs host colorful
coral fish and thousands of other marine creatures. The inner
islands, such as Koh Larn, Koh Sak and Koh Krok, are accessible within 45
minutes by boat. The outer islands take a bit longer to get to
but have better diving sites. Several wrecks, located at depths
between 12 and 28 meters, offer experienced divers even greater
challengers and adventures.
Getting to Pattaya:
By Land
only 2 1/2 hours from Bangkok by
road. Air-conditioned buses leave daily, 20 minutes between 6:00
a.m. and 6:00 p.m. from the Ekamai (Eastern Bus Terminal), Sukhumvit
Road (tel: 02 391-9829). If you drive, take highway #34 from
Bangkok to Chonburi and then highway #3 to Pattaya. Motor way
starting from Rama IX road is highly recommended.
To Sattahip and Samae
San
You may start at Pattaya. About 2
hours by boat from Pattaya. Alternatively, it takes about an hour
by road to get to a boat at Samae San, and then another 30 minutes or so
to get out to the dive site. It is probably a good idea to arrange
things through a local dive operator, especially if you aren't familiar
with the area. Since most diving sites around Sattahip are
reserved for the Thai military. The wrecks of the Bremen and
the Hardeep-two major attractions for divers visiting the Pattaya area -
may not be easy.
Accommodation:
There are a wide range of accommodation
from fans to 5-star hotels. In the peak season about Nov - Mar, it
is strongly recommended to book well in advance.

good discounts on accommodations for you, just like me.
