Chainat: General Tourist Information

According to King Rhamkamhaeng’s historical stone inscription records, the province of Chainat was supposedly established during the same period of time that King Phya Ler Tai reigned Sukothai. There was then an ancient community called Praek or Sant situated on the right bank of Chao Phya River at a place now known as Pak Kling Praek Sri Racha. Later a new township was formed nearby and was ruled by a man named Chao Sam Phya who was later named king Bharom Raja Thiraj II of Ayutthaya. During Kingrama V of Chakri Dynasty, this township had become Chainat Province and had moved the center of town from Laem yang to the left of the river. The ancient community of Sant gradually decliened and has since then become a small ‘Amphur’ (or district) within the province.

Historically, Chainat had always been an important strategic battlefield in wars with the Burmese and always ended in victories. Therefor the name Chainat was given to the place meaning ‘Victorious fames’.
