AMPHUR SANTKABURI

Wat Maha Thad is an old Buddhist temple built during the Ayutthaya period located at Moo 8, Tambon prak Sriraja, Amphur Santburi, Chainat. In the old days, the temple was called Wat Hua Muang or Wat Srisa Muang. In the latter Ayutthaya period of Chao Yee, the temple was renovated and Chedi containing holy relics had been added to the place with big square base decorated with mud and clay Buddhist images.

There are seven chambers in the same hall of the temple certain section of which assembly were used for local administrative functions because the area is still known as “town square”. The Vihara of the temple was built in the style of early Ayutthaya period.

The place features several archeological master pieces such as

Three big mud and clay Chedi, each setting on top of a square base built in Lopburi architectural style. There were lter renovated by the Fine Arts Department in 1983 which in turn added more glamour and charisma to the pieces.

A stone Buddha status in a newer vihara which is built adjacent to the ld one. This particular Buddha was highly revered by people of Chainat and central provinces who called the statue “Luang Poh Moh”. Behind the statue is a big pillar known as “town pillar” the statue was therefore called Luang Poh Lak Muang (Town Pillar Buddha Statue).

Wat Phra Keaw
is another important and old temple off the province within the temple there is a beautiful Chedi built on a temple there is a beautiful Chedi built on a square base located at #10 Tambon Praek Sri Racha, Amphur Santburi. The stupa is said to be the queen of all the stupas in Southeast Asia for her beautiful form and shape which was built in Lopburi Lavau tradition in a form of high shape and pattern typical to that influences. In the front part of the stupa is a Wiharn Luang Poh Chai with an interesting lintel engraved and attached to the Vihara. The lintel features a front-up image of an elephant lying on a platform. Top part of the image is a picture of either that of Lord Siva of Indra pouring holy water upon a lintel splashing water to the elephant. The image was abbot fixed the pieces together and place in the Vihara in the front of Stupa. A newer Vihara is being built to cover the imageLuang Poh Chai.

Monkeys Park
is another interesting natural resort in Amphur Santburis. It is located in a temple called Wat Dhamma Mikavas (Wat Kang Kao) at Moo 5, Tambon Po-Ngam in rubber plantation woods with a small river called River Noi passing through. There are thousand of monkeys in the park. In the temple, there are famous Buddha statue named “Luang Poh Tao”
