Jatujak Market or Chatuchak, Weekend market Bangkok

Jatujak or Chatuchak market is the largest weekend market in Bangkok, Thailand. We believe it is also the largest of the world. Frequently called J.J., it covers over 35 acres (1.13 km²) and contains upwards of 15,000 stalls. It is estimated that the market receives between 200,000 and 300,000 visitors each day. Most stalls only open on Saturdays and Sundays.

The market offers a wide variety of products including household items, clothing, Thai handicrafts, religious artifacts, collectibles, foods, and live animals.

Chatuchak market is adjacent to the Kamphaengphet station (MRT) of the Bangkok Metro, or about a 5-minute walk from the Mo Chit (หมอชิต) Skytrain (BTS) station and Suan Chatuchak(Chatuchak Park) station(MRT).  You can get here very easilier than before.

History
Chatuchak Market owes its origin to Field Marshal Plaek Phibulsongkram, the late prime minister of Thailand (1938-1944, 1948-1957), who came up with the idea of setting up a flea market in every town. As a result, the first flea market in Bangkok was held at Sanam Luang and was called Sanam Luang flea Market. However, there was time when the place was needed for other special functions and the flea market was then relocated to Saranrom Palace and settled there for 8 years. After that, it was moved again to Sanam Chai. But because of the limited space, it had to be moved back to Sanam Luang. In the same year, the government issued a policy to turn Sanam Luang into a public park for citizens of Bangkok and to be the venue to celebrate 200-year-anniversary of Bangkok, which would be held in 1982. Thus, it was decided that the flea market would be held at the Phahonyothin area from then on and it is later called Chatuchak Market after the nearby park under the same name.

How to get to Jatujak market:
SkyTrain - BTS at Station N8, Mo Chit (Terminus).
Subway - MRT at stations #2 Kamphaeng Phet (closest - between Areas 1 / 2) or #3 Mo Chit (short walk from park).
By bus - Ordinary buses 3, 8, 26, 27, 28, 34, 38, 39, 44, 52, 59, 74, 77, 96, 97, 104, 108, 112, 134, 136, 138 and 145. Air-con buses 2, 3, 9, 10, 12, 13, 29, 38, 39, 44, 136 and 138.
By taxi, ask for Suan Jatujak (Chatuchak park).
Open from 08.00 to 18.00 on Saturdays and Sundays.

Useful advice:

Since the beginning of June (2008). The Chatuchak Market authorities have introduced a complete ban on smoking for the whole market. Violations to the smoking ban would be fined 2,000 Baht.

A map of the market's layout, is available at the market and in several Bangkok bookstores. It is indispensable for finding things in the maze produced by Chatuchak's more then 15,000 stalls.

point and take. Most of the clients are Thai, ofcourse, it is difficult for a foreign to carry oversea. It will not pass the checkpoint at the airport.

This is not fish, but turtle. Personally, I don't recommend to buy such a kin of this animal.

Baby bird from the wild. If you are care of animal rights, you should avoid the animal zone. There is nothing intentionally 'bad' happening here, it is just that on some of the stalls the animals look to be in a poor shape, mainly due to the effects of the heat.

She sells but we don't buy.

All products are on sales here. Bargaining is expected, by stall holders at Chatuchak even though the marked prices have already looked cheap. Many traders in the more central areas of Bangkok also have a stall here, selling exactly the same goods for much, much lower prices. The chances are you won't come away empty-handed.

Comment# 25 at: 2008-09-22 21:23:31 Comment by: Thai Tour

With around ten thousand stall holders turning up every Saturday and Sunday - you will find everything: pets, bags, shirts, watches, handicraft, paintings, ceramic, food, etc.

The market is divided into numbered areas called as "Soi". You can pick up a free map from Tourist Center, situated near bank offices (center of the market).

JJ Market is a particularly good place to find all manner of Thai handicrafts, the quality varies but many are high quality and fortunately the intense competition between stall holders keeps the prices low. Be warned though when buying what looks like an antique, the large majority on offer are fakes and telling the difference between fake and genuine can be extremely difficult. Please be reminded that antiques require an export permit.

Tips:
Stall holders may up the price if they see you're a foreiner, but not by all that much, so don't assume that they're trying to rip you off.

Always be polite, good natured and smile when you embark upon a haggle. Only ask the price if you are absolutely certain that you want the item - it's not unknown for the stall holder to follow you if you walk away, particularly if you're their first customer of the day. If you are the first customer of the day, and you buy something, watch what the stallholder does with the money. He or she will probably brush the stall several times with it, in various places, and perhaps do a wai. This is the stallholder's way of blessing the stall to give it luck, and of praying for many more customers to come that day.

Not surprisingly local produce is more frequently seen than international food. This street hawker sells fried grasshoppers, of course for food. It is very high portien. Nearby, you may find a simple charcoal barbecue like squid. It should look better for you to eat.

Comment# 68 at: 2008-09-25 12:20:51 Comment by: Yaya

Jatujak has in theory been segregated into areas depending on the types of goods sold, and there are maps available for the market. You're as well to just forget them and just wander wherever takes your fancy, as it is an extremely disorientating place of many narrow alleys and trying to follow a map around can prove very frustrating.

Comment# 69 at: 2008-09-26 02:09:09 Comment by: Tim

Goods e.g. bags, shoes, clothes should be interesting for all foreiner tourists as they are very cheap.

Comment# 70 at: 2008-09-27 01:22:37 Comment by: TT

I'd suggest you should plan before going shopping. Within a day, you cannot finish all zones. Map is necessary especially for the one who comes here at the first time.
