Wat Na Phrameru, Ayutthaya
|
| |
| The former name of this monastery was Wat Phra Merurachikaram. Located on the bank of Khlong Sabua opposite the grand palace, the date of construction is unknown. The Ubosot design is of very old typical Thai style. The most interesting objects are the principal Buddha image, fully decorated in regal attire, and another image make of black stone in the small Wihan.

The temple dates to around the 18th century. There is a record of its being restored during the reign of King Boromakot (1733-1758). The main sanctuary (bot) shown here has been recently rebuilt, in the classical Ayutthayan style.

The Ayutthaya-style Buddha image is from the main sanctuary. It is about 18 feet high and covered in gold leaf.

This unusual Dvaravati Mon image is housed in the small chapel of Wat Na Phra Meru. Seated "European" style with hands resting on knees, this form is not often seen in images of the Buddha. The statue was found in Wat Mahathat, and from the same art style of Taravadee era.

The principal Buddha image at Wat Na Phra Men is seated in the 'subduing Mara' position, and wears royal attire. Buddha images were royal attire were kind of typical for the later Ayutthaya period. In a separate temple building, a seated Buddha image of the Dvaravati period can be seen
